Honoring a Hero: The CAF Capital Wing's Showcase at Shenandoah Valley Airport

WEYERS CAVE, Va. - April 27, 2024 The Capital Wing Warbird Showcase at Shenandoah Valley Airport on April 27 & 28 was an aviation enthusiast's dream come true. Despite initial concerns about the weather, Mother Nature pleasantly surprised us, with the rain on Saturday morning clearing up quickly and Sunday offering a gorgeous day of sunshine, setting the perfect backdrop for our event. It’s tough to get a formal count, but we estimate around 1,500-1,750 members of our community stopped in for a visit!

Throughout the weekend, attendees were treated to the sights and sounds of historic warbirds taking to the skies, unique static aircraft on display, and delicious food. A total of 40 warbird rides were flown on Sunday, allowing participants to experience the thrill of flight aboard legendary aircraft. Among these rides, 13 lucky individuals soared in the Stinson OY-1, 11 enjoyed the Fairchild UC-61 Forwarder, and 16 took flight in the iconic PT-17 Stearman bi-plane.

None of this would have been possible without the dedication of the 20 remarkable volunteers from Commemorative Air Force Capital Wing. They worked tirelessly throughout the weekend to ensure the smooth operation of the event, from organizing flights to sharing their wealth of aviation knowledge with attendees.

But perhaps the most heartwarming highlight of the weekend was the Capital Wing’s honoring George Bailey, a remarkable 99-year-old WWII veteran. George, who served in the Army 283rd Field Artillery Battalion, joined us on Saturday as part of his 99th birthday celebrations. After engaging with the fantastic crew of the Capital Wing, George was offered the opportunity to return on Sunday for an honor flight aboard the Stinson OY-1.

George's connection to the aircraft was deeply personal, as he had flown on similar models during his time in the military. Following his service, George spent three decades as a field service representative for Pratt & Whitney, further solidifying his lifelong bond with aviation.

On Sunday, George arrived at SHD with his family, ready to take to the skies once more. The Capital Wing volunteers spared no effort in honoring him, greeting him with flags and cheers as he made his way to the aircraft. With a simple wave, George embarked on his flight with volunteer pilot Rob Kreig, relishing every moment of the experience.

As George touched down, it was evident that the flight had brought him immense joy. He wasted no time in expressing his desire to return for another flight to celebrate his 100th birthday next year—a request I know the Capital Wing will be thrilled to fulfill.

In honoring George, we also pay tribute to his incredible service to our country. His story serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made by the brave men and women who have served in the armed forces.

The Capital Wing Warbird Showcase at Shenandoah Valley Airport was a resounding success, thanks to the support of our dedicated crew, enthusiastic attendees, and the unforgettable moments shared with individuals like George Bailey. Thank you to all who joined us this past weekend! If you are interested in attending other Capital Wing events in the mid-Atlantic this summer, their full schedule can be found here.
