Battleship Texas Moves to Galveston for Repairs

LA PORTE, TX (August 31, 2022) - The USS Texas, the last remaining battleship to fight in both World Wars, left its longtime home at the San Jacinto Battleground to be moved to Galveston, Texas for repairs. The battleship will undergo restoration work on its hull which is damaged from years of exposure to salt, foam, and silt. Repairs will be done at Gulf Copper & Manufacturing Corporations’ Galveston Shipyard and will cost an estimated $35 million. The USS *Texas *has not been moved since its last repair trip to Galveston in 1988. The battleship will not return to the San Jacinto Battleground. Its new home has yet to be announced.

The USS Texas was launched in 1912 and since has served in several important roles in U.S. military history. It participated in World War I and was heavily relied on during World War II. Some of its missions include Operation Overlord, D-Day, Battle of Cherbourg, and Operation Dragoon. The restoration work is being conducted by the Battleship Texas Foundation along with their partners, the Texas Parks and Wildlife Foundation, and the Texas Historical Commission.
