Delta Blues Squadron Gains Momentum with T-6 and Memphis Event

May 24, 2019, Memphis, TN – The Commemorative Air Force’s Delta Blues Squadron based in Memphis is gaining momentum. The Unit was recently assigned a T-6 Texan. With a new aircraft in the hangar, and several events coming up, the unit is hoping to add some new members.

The squadron will be participating the Memphis in May International Festival on the River on May 25th. The Delta Blues Squadron will participate in the airshow portion of the event.

    • Grant Nielsen, Flying his Cap 232 “Bubbles” from New Richmond, WI. After 14 years of competition, Grant’s mentors thought he was ready to dip a toe into the air show water in 2012. Flying air shows has been a lifelong dream for Grant and he feels incredibly blessed to be able to accomplish it. After over 4500 hours of flight time, he still looks forward to every flight. Some of the maneuvers you will see include the Hammerhead, the Torque Roll, the Cuban 8, the Half Cuban 8, the Shark’s Tooth, and of course Loops and Rolls.
    • U.S. Unlimited Aerobatic Team Member Jim Bourke flying his High Performance Extra 330SC! Jim’s aviation interests began in his childhood - he loved airshows and earned his pilots license as a teenager. He is an avid enthusiast of radio-controlled models and drones, has appeared on the Discovery channel, and made many media appearances related to aerobatics, aviation, and radio control. Jim competes in the highest category of aerobatic competition and is the most active competitor in the country, averaging 10 contests per year from Washington to Florida. Known for his aggressive style, he is currently undefeated in freestyle aerobatic competition and is a nationally qualified aerobatic judge. He traveled the world in 2017 as a member of the 2017 United States Aerobatic Team.

Jim’s show is a high energy display of the capabilities of the Extra 330LX featuring a complete repertoire of aerobatic maneuvers from precision flight to gyroscopic tumbling. The Extra 330LX is a 315hp unlimited class composite aerobatic monoplane, built in Germany and is capable of more than 1 roll every second. During his performance, Jim routinely pulls 9gs or more, pushes 7gs, and reaches speeds of 250 mph!

    • Capt. Skip Stewart flying Prometheus the flying machine! As the recipient of the 2013 Bill Barber Award for Showmanship and the 2015 Art Scholl Award, Skip Stewart has proven to be one of the most entertaining Airshow pilots in the world today. With over ten thousand hours of flying experience, being an Airline Transport Pilot, Boeing 727, and MD-11 Captain, a Certified Flight Instructor, having owned and operated an aerobatic flight school, earned Gold Medals in regional aerobatic competitions, served as Chief Pilot for a Fortune 100 company and with more than fourteen years entertaining airshow fans around the World, Skip feels comfortable saying that he is one of the very best in the business today. Skip's flying has been featured in magazines that include Plane & Pilot, Smithsonian Air & Space, AOPA, Sports Illustrated, World Airshow News, Auto Pilot, as well as in multiple other domestic and international publications. Skip Stewart is the first pilot to fly an airplane under a jumping motorcycle at an Airshow and he also flies with several other pilots forming shows such as the renowned TinStix of Dynamite Act.
