Decades of Aviation Heritage: The 40th Annual CAF Wings Over Houston Airshow

(Houston, TX – November 1, 2024) - The 40th annual CAF Wings Over Houston Airshow soared into Ellington Airport last month, bringing with it the unmatched energy of roaring engines, iconic warbirds, and an enthusiastic crowd united in their love for aviation history. This year’s airshow was nothing short of spectacular, drawing tens of thousands of spectators who were treated to a breathtaking display of vintage and modern aircraft, thrilling aerobatics, and the opportunity to meet some of our nation’s heroes.

A Showcase of Aviation Across the Ages

Wings Over Houston is known for its extensive roster of aircraft, and this milestone year was no exception. From World War II bombers to Cold War jets and contemporary fighter airplanes, the lineup included aircraft representing almost every era of aviation. The show’s signature performance, TORA TORA TORA performed by members of the Commemorative Air Force (CAF) wowed the audience once again. An audible “GASP” from the crowd was the reaction to the aerial reenactment of Pearl Harbor, a demonstration they have been doing since the late 1970s.

One of the biggest crowd-pleasers was the U.S. Navy Blue Angels, whose precise, high-speed maneuvers and intricate formations left the audience in awe. The Blue Angels represent the cutting-edge capabilities of the modern U.S. military and demonstrate the skill and dedication of today’s airmen and airwomen. In a nod to the history of jet aviation, the show also featured the Vietnam-era A-1 Skyraider and F-100 Super Sabre, which thrilled audiences with their unmistakable power and deep connection to one of America’s most pivotal conflicts.

Veterans and Special Guests: Living History Among Us

One of the highlights of Wings Over Houston is the opportunity to meet veterans whose stories are intertwined with the very aircraft on display. This year’s show welcomed numerous veterans from World War II, Korea, Vietnam, and more recent conflicts, allowing visitors to connect personally with the men and women who served. Veterans shared stories and answered questions, bringing history to life in a way only they can. For many, meeting these heroes was as memorable as seeing the planes in flight.

Special guest and NASA astronaut Gene Kranz, was also in attendance, sharing stories from his record-setting year in space and his insights into the future of exploration. His presence underscored the role that Houston and Ellington Airport have played in American space history, as well as the ongoing connection between aviation and space exploration.

An Unforgettable Experience for All Ages

The turnout for this year’s airshow was record-breaking, with over 100,000 attendees across two days. Families, veterans, aviation enthusiasts, and newcomers alike enjoyed a variety of activities, from exploring static displays of aircraft to watching live aerial demonstrations. Food, merchandise, and children’s activities filled the grounds, offering something for everyone. The CAF’s flightline services team and marshaling detachment ensured a safe and engaging experience, expertly managing both aircraft and crowds.

Honoring the Past, Inspiring the Future

The CAF Wings Over Houston Airshow serves as a bridge between the past and future of aviation, honoring the legacy of those who flew in combat while inspiring a new generation to dream of the skies. The diversity of aircraft on display demonstrated how far technology has come while reminding attendees of the enduring importance of courage, sacrifice, and dedication.

The 40th anniversary of Wings Over Houston was a resounding success, bringing history to life in ways that only an airshow of this magnitude can. As the weekend came to a close, it was clear that the legacy of these aircraft, and the stories of those who flew them, will continue to inspire for generations to come. With the support of the Commemorative Air Force, the spirit of aviation history remains alive and well, reminding us all to look to the sky and remember.
