Reno Air Racing Association releases top three city finalist
Reno NV. , Feb. 29, 2024 You can feel the excitment as the Reno Air Racing Association (RARA) reveals the top contenders vying to host the esteemed National Championship Air Races (NCAR). After careful consideration, three cities have emerged as finalists: Casper, Wyo., Pueblo, Colo., and Roswell, N.M. These locations stand poised to inherit the legacy of an event that has injected approximately $100 million annually into the economy of its current home in northern Nevada.
Fred Telling, CEO and chairman of the board for RARA, expressed gratitude for the enthusiastic response from the six bidding communities. "We've been overwhelmed by the amazing, positive feedback," Telling remarked. "Through a rigorous vetting process, we feel confident that one of these three locations will provide the right mix of elements our event needs to continue to race well into the future."
The journey to select a new home began in April 2023 when RARA sent out an official request for proposals, receiving 38 inquiries from across the nation. Following two bidders' conferences, eleven cities expressed interest, with six submitting comprehensive proposals for consideration.
A crucial aspect of the evaluation process involved site visits by RARA board members, Class pilot representatives, and committee participants to assess each location's suitability. Factors such as crowd capacity, aircraft accommodation, and race course feasibility were meticulously scrutinized. Ultimately, Casper, Pueblo, and Roswell emerged as the prime candidates to host the prestigious event.
While expressing appreciation for the efforts of Buckeye, Ariz., Thermal, Calif., and Wendover, Utah, Telling highlighted their potential as expansion venues for future consideration. "While these locations were not ultimately chosen," Telling emphasized, "they each have tremendous merit and value in their own right."
Anticipation mounts as a final decision on the future home of the National Championship Air Races looms, expected to be announced in April 2024. In the meantime, RARA remains focused on preparing for its 2024 air show and 60th-anniversary celebration in Reno, set to precede the return of the air races in 2025.
